It’s Hard to Explain to People What You do
One of the toughest things you’ll have to face as an Internet marketer is explaining to people exactly what it is you do. After all, they won’t see you leaving for work in the morning along with the rest of the 9-5ers. In fact, you may be seen strolling the neighborhood, shopping, or cutting your grass during the day when most adults should be at work.
This leads to all kinds of assumptions being made. In fact, I’m sure that most of my neighbors think that I’m on some sort of disability pension or welfare. As for friends and family, they know that I’m making money online, they just don’t know how I’m doing it.
What I find is that most people can’t get their head around the concept of making money on the Internet because they don’t know anyone else that does this. Internet marketing also has a bit of a negative reputation as far as the general population goes. Because people don’t understand it, it can’t be a viable way of earning an income.
The truth of the matter is that any successful Internet marketer is working very hard. You simply won’t make it if you don’t – it’s that simple. On the positive side, if you like living life on your own schedule without having to report to a boss, then this is an amazing lifestyle. When it comes down to it, the hard work is much more tolerable than putting up with a 9-to-5 job.
So what do I tell people I do for a living? Usually I just say that I develop websites and do freelance work on the Internet. Most people can understand it if it’s put in these terms. If I were to start talking about what I actually do to make money (Adsense, affiliate marketing), they’d have a hard time understanding how you could possibly make money from such a thing.
In a way, I don’t mind because if everyone knew how to make money online, the industry would be quickly swamped.
In any case, what I find is that people aren’t willing to put in the necessary hours to learn how to do it anyway. Even if they knew the steps to take, they lack the drive to make a success of it. Believe me, I’ve tried to help friends and family get into this but I’ve had little success in bringing anyone on board. People just want instant gratification and if things don’t happen quickly, they’re off doing something else. Oh well, such is life.

People want immediate gratification because that is wage-slavery has us conditioned. If you look all around, people work x hours and expect x payment. However, they fail to see that to make break-throughs (eg leaving the rat-race) you need to invest resources (money, energy) for a period of time before making any significant returns.
If you can’t live with this, then its best to go back to the cubicle and resign from all your hopes of change.
Keep bloggin’ I enjoy readind your posts!
How much do you make from internet marketing?
Hi Claire,
My income varies pretty much according to what I do that month and how much effort I put into it. I probably average about $1000US/month.
While this may not seem like much to some, it is enough to pay all my bills. Keep in mind that I’ve only recently started working full-time at this. It’s when I stopped treating it as a hobby and started treating it as a business that the money started to come in.
While my “hourly wage” might be low for the time being, I can see a huge potential that is limited only by the effort I put into it.
Oh, and most importantly, I don’t have to do the 9-5 thing. Heck, I don’t even have to answer to customers when it comes right down to it:)

Hi Phil
Thanks for the info. You are doing so well. I think that $1k is a great amount of money and you have only recently started. You are doing so well to escape the rat race and its great that you are covering your bills. It must feel so nice to know that you will never have to get back into the rat race.
I thought about putting some adverts on my blog and I created an adsense account but I got stuck at inputting the code. I am not IT literate at all. Any tips? I think I will have to buy a book and learn how to do it!
Keep posting.
Claire
Hi Claire,
I also e-mailed you about this but I’ll post it here just in case anyone else is having the same problem.
To add Adsense to your Blogger blog go to the main blogger dashboard (your account). Then: 1. Choose settings 2. Go to the Layout tab 3. Decide what area of your blog you want your ads to appear, then chose “Add a gadget” for that area. 4. Choose Adsense from the list 5. Set your style and colors 6. Make sure that your publisher ID is correct (on the bottom of that screen, I think) 7. Save, and that should do it. It might take up to 10 minutes for your ads to start showing. Hope that helps, Phil
Thanks for the tips Phil – I will give it a go.
