If you plan to make money by monetizing traffic to your website, you’re going to have to concentrate on two things: creating high quality, original content – and getting back links to your site. These two work hand-in-hand and must be used together or your website is simply going to flounder in the far recesses of cyberspace forever. No one is ever going to know how great your site is if they can’t find it.

One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was creating tons of original content for one of my websites and neglecting to get back links. Somehow I assumed that people would just love this original material and would naturally flock to my site. Well, after creating at least a hundred pages, I was still only getting a smattering of traffic each day. Most of that was probably search engine bots.

Eventually, I smartened up and realize that without providing back links to my site, no one was going to know it even existed. It took me a long time to figure that one out and once I did start a backlinking program, I noticed my traffic increasing daily.

Alternatively, if you have a site with very few pages and weak content, it really doesn’t matter how many back links you get, the search engines are going to know that the site is thin and probably won’t rank it for any serious keywords.

Also, my best advice to anyone just getting started is to concentrate on one site, write good quality content, and get some good quality back links. Become laser focused on just those two tasks.

For those of you that are a little unfamiliar with back links, these are links from other websites that lead to your site. The search engines follow these links and take them as a vote of confidence for your site. Once you have enough good quality back links, they (the search engines) will start ranking you higher in their results page.

Of course, getting those links isn’t quite as easy as it sounds – more on that in upcoming posts.
