The corporate advantage over workers

Filed under: The corporate world, Unemployed — theratra @ 11:02 am

One of the biggest problems (as I see it anyway) in today’s job market is that employers have the upper hand when it comes to supply and demand – and they know this. There are still too many people chasing too few jobs.

Sure, there is an abundant supply of minimum wage positions, but I’m talking about real jobs – jobs that can actually support families. And really, there wouldn’t even be minimum wage jobs if the supply and demand shifted a little more in favor of the employee.

I can’t help but wonder if the workplace, as we know it today, would become a little less stressful once employers knew they no longer had the upper hand. What choice would they have but to start treating workers better and become more accommodating?

I’m sure that hiring practices would also become a little more realistic if there were more jobs than workers.

The job hiring process has become ridiculous. Credit checks, drug testing, criminal checks – and I’m talking about regular jobs, not some high-level, government position.

Why?

Because they can; that’s why.

And should you be lucky enough to actually land one of these golden opportunities, you’ll be without benefits or a pension. What happens to all this money? It goes right into the pockets of the shareholders.

Mind you, this has happened ever so slowly. Every generation gets less and less and works harder for what they do get. After all, once they started taking things away and getting off scot-free, they just kept pushing the envelope to see how much they could save the corporation. Screw the worker drones.

And we still put up with it because the employer has the supply and demand advantage. “Don’t like it, then leave.” Simple as that.

I hope that in my lifetime I get to see what it’s like with the shoe on the other foot. I want to see corporations grovel and kiss my ass for a chance to hire me.

Think It’ll ever happen?
